Viana do Castelo
Viana do Castelo is first and foremost one of the most beautiful cities in northern Portugal. Their participation in the Portuguese Discoveries and later also in cod fishing shows their traditional connection to the sea.
Viana do Castelo is quickly reached from Oporto, or similarly from Valença for those coming from Spain. From the Santa Luzia hill, one can observe the privileged geographical situation of the town, which is also next to the sea and the mouth of the river Lima. This stunning view and the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Ventura Terra’s revivalist building from 1898, can be the starting point for visiting the city.
Booking.comValença
A border town, located by the Minho River, Valença is above all surrounded by walls and retains the characteristics of a fortified town in the 17th and 18th centuries. XVII-XVIII in the style of the French military architect Vauban.
Its first name was “Contrasta”, which meant a village opposite to another, due to its location opposite the Galician city of Tui on the other bank of the River Miño.
Booking.comPontevedra
“Pontevedra gives drink to those who pass by” is a Galician saying that expresses very well the essence of this city: hospitality.
This tradition of welcoming is reflected in the Pilgrim Virgin, emblem of the Portuguese road to Compostela, certainly honoured by the Pontevedrinos with a curious church, a national monument, with the floor plan in the shape of a scallop!
